I have said this before but its worth repeating as many times as it takes in as many ways for you to learn the core of pretty much all of your problems. Overeating, eating too many sweets, making the wrong choices in relationships, getting lost on your i phone i pad in or your favorite app or game, being lazy, not exercising. The list is endless.
If I can teach the world this one thing they will erect statues of me at some point in the future. So it is worth repeating. Like a book that can easily be summarized in one chapter, but contains countless examples. Lets see the 80/20 rule. Did I really need 400 pages of examples? Some ideas are so important its worth beating it into you primitive hard wired brain.
This is not only one of them, but this concept has so many tentacles it is worth exploring and uncovering all the far reaching consequences that are effecting you so you can at least have a fighting chance to make some changes. As well as having the awareness to observe who is making your decisions, so you can intervene when necessary and make adjustments.
For anyone alive today you can thank Grog or whatever your ancestors names were. Think about the unfathomable number of ancestors that preceded you. You can either believe in evolution or we were just placed here by god fully formed. If we have evolved over hundreds of thousands or even millions of years you obviously evolved to avoid fire and bitter poisons and avoid predators, and that part of you might even be hard wired in your neurology from even more primitive ancestors.
So thing about the enormity of what brought you here, even if you want to just believe that you only had 75,000 years of human ancestors. Actually if you want to check out a really fun video, check this youtube out. But back to my point. So if any single one of at least many thousands of your ancestors didnt have a well formed sweet tooth that avoided bitter poisons, your great great great….. well you get the idea, they would have died. So your immediate parents and great grand parents wouldnt have been born and you wouldnt exist. That is so profound. So you crave sweets, duh! Of course you do. Its hard wired into your primitive brain or be evolution call it what you will. And if you watched the youtube and believe that we further evolved from monkeys or chimps and their ancestors, then that is hard wiring that has existed for millions of years. So its there live with it.
But we have a ton of ways of dealing with it from supplements like chromium and even cinnamon and a few others. And even substituting. I recently started buying mixed nuts with raisins, dried cranberries mango and pineapple. Do I still occasionally buy ice cream? Yes. But at least I am not eating cookies all day long. I even resisted buying cookies and instead bought dried apple crisps for a snack. But you can also make sure you are fully satiated with enough protein and fat so you are not starving. For me that is eggs or a hard boiled egg for breakfast or early lunch or a can of sardines, tuna or salmon.
I was reviewing this post. This is HUGE and needs to be expanded. You will have to find what works for you. I can promise you one thing, no glucose starved brain is going to resist a candy bar or some cookies. So find the right compromise for you. Actually fat is satiety for me. But i just googled “fat and satiety” I wanted to double check myself before I shared this with a friend. Its really complex and there are opposite views on this including types of fat. Maybe thats why for me no 1 is eggs. Sardines and Salmon and Tuna do nothing for my satiety. Back to keeping track of what works for you or your biomedical individuality.
Want to hear something crazy to prove you need to “do you” learn you track you? I just hung up with a friend from Florida who was way off kilter, balance whatever. Her vitamin D was 14. Its supposed to be 80. She is as white as sand, so its not dark skin blocking the sun. She gets 20 minutes of full sun every day. So keep track of you. If you have insurance get as many tests as your insurance will pay for. My twice a year blood tests are over 6pages long, costs the insurance company over $6000, and tests all my hormones. The doctor writes CPT codes to justify testing everything.
But can you imagine not testing vitamin D? Thank god that was discovered and adjusted before Covid.
I think sugar is our number one enemy so it was worth going into that detail. Our newly emerged no 2 threat or maybe should be called our no 1 threat is our, apps, and our phones. Everyone is addicted to something. Middle aged women scouring Pinterest for their next big decorating idea, younger people incessantly scrolling through tik tok or baby boomers still on facebook. And who is it on Instagram LOL? And what about games? So there are two problems here. One is dopamine and the other is your primitive desire to not become prey ie someone else’s food.
PS in hope of motivating you, do you really want this guy, Grog running your life? or should I say ruining your life? Because I guarantee you he is, unless you work really hard at recognizing where he is “F”ing with you. So obviously I am using Grog as the representative of your primitive brain. PS they do say we only use 10% of our brains. And thats a genius. Maybe Grog is in charge of the other 90%. Just sayin. Do we even know what goes on in the other 90%? So a quick little search tells us that the remaining 90% are glial or some sort of neural cells. So thats just leave it at the fact that there is a lot of programming in our brain that drives our behavior, whether is inherited or hard wired. I think we can all agree if our ancestors didnt have acute senses and the ability to notice everything around themselves, they too would have died off.
Hmmm what do we have in today’s world that indeed might actually sabotage those with the highest ability to notice everything and not get eaten by a lion or step into quick sand or avoid the snake or other predator hanging from a tree or sneaking up behind us? So those with the keen abilities to notice everything are all of our ancestors, or we wouldnt be here. So dont beat yourself up when you pick up your phone to call work and you see a dozen notifications and you land up losing yourself, because that is how you have been programmed for millions of years. Start by turning off all but absolutely necessary notifications. When you do CHOOSE to go to Facebook or whatever your favorite app is, it will still be there and all the notifications will be there. You just dont need them screaming at you on your home screen. Assuming you are human.
PS what about dopamine? So besides your absolutely necessary survival skill of noticing everything, you get a hit of dopamine, every time you click and see something. You are no better than a chimp pressing a bar to get food or Grog snorting cocaine for the first time. In fact if you give mice the choice of cocaine or food they will press that bar until they die. Is it really that different when we slowly extinguish our life force in favor of tapping away on some stupid app? The average person spends 4 hours a day on screen. I know mine is twice as high. So we have some serious problems here. Dopamine probably a great idea for another post.
I think if we could even tackle the top 2 we would have fabulous lives or improve our lives dramatically. Literally be living our lives vs just observing it. Heck me just writing vs playing or reading or watching TV or facebook is a 100% improvement of my time. I am thinking, writing, sharing contrasting comparing researching vs mindlessly clicking just to make someone a lot of money. Just stop, look, listen to your body, quiet your mind. What is important to you, not the advertiser? Is it going for a walk calling a relative a friend, doing some gardening, taking a class.
To make matters worse, the whole world was locked down for 2 years. So Grog had full control of all of us. Millions of small businesses were destroyed while Amazon prospered. We learned to stay at home and further immerse ourselves on our little rectangles ordering stuff. Its been a true disaster on so many levels. We need to fight that much harder to regain control of our brains and our lives.
You may never completely eliminate Grog or Grog thinking from your brain. But you certainly dont need to let him run everything all the time. I went a little deeper in another blog on happiness. But its worth repeating here, if you are wired or programmed to avoid pain any association to previous pain will be avoided. Lets face it all of these programs are connected in your brain. You can spend $50,000 a year going to psychoanalysis three times a week, or you can simply explore the ways that you have adopted programs with flaws into your brain.
I gave the analogy in my other blog. You were right to dump the partner that drank too much physically and mentally abused you and literally beat the shit out of you every week and you could never find him when you tried to call him. But that program which was correctly fully loaded into your brain will start playing when any of those red flags appear in the future.
So of course when you finally meet the brilliant brain surgeon, nicest guy in the world, kisses the ground you walk on, and he is unreachable because the brain surgery took 10 hours not the three he said it would take, you have already started to play the program of the A hole that almost killed you. So you are freaking out running “A” hole program for 7 hours imagining all of the times no 1 Ahole cheated on you and visualizing all kinds of crazy stuff. And when he finally calls you after 10 hour exhausting surgery you probably hand up on him and dont want to even believe him. And guess what anyone smart enough to be a brain surgeon is so highly focused on his work. He probably does neglect other minutiae in his life. So that is the typical genius that will forget to charge his phone or even take his phone with him. So what do you do? So you fight with him every time he triggers one of your programs and you can guess where this relationship is going.
But again back to the basic programming we all share. Survival. What is probably hard wired for survival. I would argue that today we are still faced with the two giant ones causing 90% of our problems. Why are 60% of the people in this county obese? Its not just the sweet tooth. Guess what? If your ancestors werent absolutely the best at storing fat, you wouldnt be reading this. You know what else you needed to do to survive 10,000 years ago? Rest and conserve energy in between the rare killing of animals that you ate. I am talking about before agriculture and refrigeration (LOL). Observe any animal, a cat a lion a dog. They eat and they sleep. Its the right thing to do to store energy(fat) and conserve energy, sleep. So we have to literally fight our programming. Its a wonder any of us ever do anything.
God grant me the serenity to accept the things i can not change the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference. This applies to everything. I found one that had this added sentence “living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time” How profound.
