NAC if you dont know what this is, its even more important you read this.

For starters it saved my life. But for those with a short attention span. Let me start with, it is actually used in hospitals as a drug to detoxify the liver with tylenol overdoses. This is truly a miracle supplement available as an over the counter supplement that has a plethora of benefits. If you drink alcohol, take it, full stop. I am just blown away by the sheer magnitude of articles when I googled “NAC for alcohol” I dont even know where to start. You should try that search yourself.

Here is a nice summary from Forbes Magazine.

“Many acute and chronic health conditions, including aging [related issues], diabetes and heart disease are associated with low glutathione levels. Because of this, glutathione supplementation is often recommended to prevent or treat diseases,” explains Kelly Johnson-Arbor, M.D., medical toxicologist and co-medical director at the National Capital Poison Center in Washington, DC. “Since oral glutathione is not absorbed well by the human body, its precursor—NAC—is often used to achieve higher glutathione levels.”

“NAC’s potential activity against SARS-CoV-2 is still under clinical studies. However, there are clinical studies to support its use to decrease the severity, duration and frequency of influenza, common colds, recurrent bronchitis and recurrent pneumonia,” says Jia-Yia Liu, M.D., an infectious disease specialist and creator of NACPRO+, a supplement primarily based on the properties of NAC.

Why it works Your body breaks down alcohol into acetaldehyde, a highly-reactive compound that is actually much more toxic to your brain than alcohol itself. Hangover symptoms can be prevented or significantly reduced if you help your body get rid of the acetaldehyde. Hangover symptoms are caused when your liver enzymes and antioxidants try to detoxify and eliminate it, but often cannot keep up. You can help your liver by supporting your body’s natural detoxification process. One way to mop up acetaldehyde is by increasing glutathione, your body’s master antioxidant. You can increase glutathione is by taking n-acetyl- cysteine (NAC). NAC is the precursor to glutathione. Oral gluathione does not appear to be effective. I am speaking to the average person that is not getting IV vitamin treatments.

NAC Here is a nice article on Web MD I am not even going to suggest some of the benefits they are suggestion because I dont want the FBI and the FDA raiding my house at 4am for suggesting a supplement can have benefits at preventing a disease. Here is their link and a few of their suggestions.

Glutathione plays a role in many chemical reactions in your body. It also helps detoxify chemicals, including some that your body creates naturally, as well as pollutants and drugs.

“Your supply of glutathione seems to decrease as you get older, possibly because your body can’t create as much. Lower glutathione levels appear to go hand-in-hand with poorer health. For instance, lower levels may play a role in many conditions that are more likely to develop in older people.

Your glutathione levels may also decrease during certain health problems, such as:

I can also say from my observation, when my dad was suffering from Parkinsons. He shuffled terribly and could barely walk and needed to lean on his walker all of the time. I took him for glutathione IVs. I took a video of him after his IV. He walked normally and said he didnt need the walker. So I told him to carry it so he could drop it and use it if he needed it. It was quite remarkable.

While NAC is generally considered safe, side effects can occur.

Possible side effects of NAC include:

  • Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
  • Low blood pressure
  • Anaphylactic reactions, such as rash, swelling, tightness of the chest or difficulty breathing
  • Increased heart rate
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

In most cases, adverse side effects of NAC are mild. However, the supplement isn’t right for everyone. People with certain medical conditions should avoid taking NAC.

Don’t take NAC if you have a bleeding disorder, know you are allergic to NAC or suffer from cystinuria (a rare kidney stone condition). NAC can also potentially elevate your homocysteine levels in high doses, which is an amino acid associated with heart disease, explains Dr. Liu.

Although NAC is available with and without a prescription, our experts agree that anyone considering a NAC supplement should first talk with their doctor.

PS in the grandest irony of all because NAC is so effective it is still being used in emergency rooms to save lives with tylenol overdoses, so that is a justification to call it a drug and there is a current push to restrict it based upon that. I Sure hope they dont start using vitamin C in hospitals then they can take that away from us too.

Finally as I alluded to in the first paragraph. I had hepatitis C, at least since the seventies. So perhaps more than 50 years. In fact I had it before it had a name. They called it Non A Non B they didnt know what it was. My doctor from the seventies retired so they offered me my blood tests. I had highly elevated liver enzyme in my blood tests from the seventies. I also got a biopsy in the 90’s where they take a chunk of your liver out. At that point they said I was stage 3. After that there is stage 4 cirrohsis liver cancer and death. As I also said I was friends with Oz Garcia. I did a lot of IV gluathione and NAC.

Follow me for a moment it gets a bit complicated. So I was stage 3 in the 90’s based on the gold standard, a biopsy. 20 years later around 2010 I did a blood test that said I was stage one, so the insurance company refused to spend over 100k for my treatment. I said hold on I have a biopsy from the 90’s They said well its impossible that you could have improved so we will treat you. How did that happen? My doctor said I would have a compromised liver and would have to be constantly monitoring it for the rest of my life. After treatment I did my first liver scan. They said my liver was perfectly normal. I said normal for someone who has had hep c for 50 years? They said no, normal for someone who never had any disease. You decide why I am healthy with a perfectly normal liver. Not going to jail to suggest that IV vitamins and supplements could have possibly contributed to protecting my liver and reversing liver disease.

Getting Started Non Surgical Treatments Explained

I have been answering phone calls for more than 10 years. There are some who call who have already decided what treatment they want and merely want a price. They ask for a procedure by name. Ironically those are the stupidest. Seriously unless you are a doctor in this particular industry with at least 15 year experience treating thousands of people each year, how would you know which technology is going to get the best results for someone with combination of varying amounts of loose skin, fat plus or minus some cellulite or stretch marks ? We all lose collagen every day of our life, so if you are over 30 years old you probably have some loose skin, or maybe just want to prevent the signs of aging. Sorry I digress could not resist.

So this is for those who are starting out. I get a lot of phone calls from people who have no clue what all these strange names and technologies are all about, Thermage, Exilis, Ultherapy, Ultrashape, Velashape, Coolsculpting, Emsculpt, Emtone, Emsculpt. I could list 100 more, but you get the idea. This all began in 2002. Thermage was the first radiofrequency device approved by the FDA in 2002 to tighten skin and treat wrinkles and since that time over 2 million treatments have been performed. So for you newbies Let me explain this with an analogy we can all relate to. Most of us have some idea that lasers have been around for a long time. You can “burn” off sun spots and other superficial blemishes. What is different here is radio frequency. We are all also familiar with a microwave oven. ( PS the doctor hates when I make this analogy) But learning is usually best accomplished by analogies. You know how your microwave can heat the middle of a chicken without browning the skin ? Well thats the beauty of radio frequency. if you tried to use a laser to reduce even a very fine wrinkle you would burn the skin before you approached the depth to which you would need to get to improve the wrinkle. So what Thermage did was have that radio frequency in a hand held wand so the technician could go over your face ( and body) and “hit” the collagen for an immediate tightening and subsequently because of the stimulation of the collagen you grow more collagen over the next 6 months. Think how elegant. Instead of losing collagen every day you are growing more collagen. Hello Gwyneth Paltrow, we have your secret.

Are you being sold a bill of goods ?

I wrote something this morning for Precision Aesthetics. I then recorded it as a podcast. But let me be a little redundant here because sometimes you need to hear something said a number of different ways before it makes sense. Especially if its about something you know nothing about. Also I sometimes take for granted all of the non surgical technologies that are in the beauty industry and think the average person has heard of them. So a little bit of background about it all then maybe what I recorded might make more sense. Let me just mention a few technologies that we offer. Thermage tightens skin, Exilis melts fat, Emsculpt make muscles by forcing 20,000 contractions, Carboxytherapy reduces stretch marks. When we see a new client we design a program that is personalized to address their particular needs. Everyone has their own unique combinations of loose skin, stretch marks, cellulite, that would require some combination of technologies to get the best results for that individual. So someone “selling” you their only machine makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. See if this makes any sense with that context

Six Pack Abs ( my answer on quora)

That is me. Nobody could have been more surprised than I was. I never had abs. Even when I was thirty years younger running 5 miles a day and 10 pounds lighter. It was after six treatments over the course of three months. Not according to their protocol, which was 4 treatments more quickly. PS I took a collage photo of what I was eating. I am not proud of it. But I did not want to alter my diet. There is nothing stupider than someone dieting and claiming a treatment helped them. For example the HCG protocol, which is injecting yourself daily with a hormone and being on a 1500 calorie a day diet. Did everyone just get stupid? 1500 calories a day leaves the average man at approximately 1500 calories a day deficit. Over the course of one month he would lose around 15 pounds. So I purposely continued to eat as poorly as I was eating winter 2018. Plus I answer the phones and I need to be able to sleep at night and know that I was full on integrity when I explained how great my results were. In fact I called one of the top study doctors in Texas to ask him why I got such great results. Seemingly better than anyone else. I said it makes no sense. You say the best results are one week later so perhaps the fact that I stretched out my treatments to every other week benefited me. He said they had tried a number of protocols. Personally I believe if you want to sell a $250,000 machine to a doctor you better be telling them they are going to earn $4000 every 10 days vs $3200 after three months I continued to eat as poorly as I was eating that winter. I even took photos of the chinese food, french fries, ice cream and all the other nasty things I was eating that winter. But my results were astonishing.

I also write a lot of answers on the website Quora on skin tightening, stretch marks, loose skin, cellulite and the newest Emsculpt for Abs, I am going to start putting some of those answers here because I speak to a lot of people who love to do a lot of research before they commit to spending a lot of money and choosing who should do their treatments ( as they should) So here is my first one I just wrote today.. Well actually its my one hundredth, but its the first one I am copying here.

How do I know if my abs are not showing because they are not developed enough or your body fat percentage is too high to see them? John Aslanian, http://www.PrecisionAestheticsmd.com NY Research International & USAnswered 1h ago

Because we offer Emsculpt we do know from their FDA approval some approximate numbers. Emsculpt is a machine that induces your muscles to do crunches. Its not your $19 ab belt. Its a $200,000 machine that forces 20,000 crunches in 30 minutes. When they got their FDA approval they presented research with 4 treatments and MRI and ultrasound before and after. They showed a 16% increase in muscle and 19% reduction in fat. However only people with less than 25% body fat showed any visual improvement, let alone a six pack. Personally I got great results at 22% body fat. Here are my photos. Ironically when i was in my thirties i was 12% body fat and did not have a six pack. So here are my personal before and after Emsculpt photos after four and after six treatments. So for reference I think you can conclude you do need around 100,000 crunches and I imagine I probably would have had even better visible results if my body fat was in the low teens vs 22%.

Thermage Face Male 35 to 65 Me!!

AGE 35 to 64

John top AGE 35  note LOOSE SKIN nasolabial folds

To Be Clear  This is all about the cheeks and the jaw line   The lower face.  That is the area that the Thermage treatment  has the most obvious and dramatic results. That was more than 30 years ago 1988, I did not have great genes.  Notice the loss of volume and collagen in the cheeks.  Pronounced nasolabial  folds  ( the lines from the nose to the corner of the mouth).  Obvious thin skin, skin is practically hanging    Loss of volume in upper cheeks   This was so long ago I even had hair and a black leather jacket LOL.  I am not even smiling and you can see the skin is loose.

BELOW 20 YEARS LATER LOTS OF COLLAGEN LOST John AGE 53

100_0345.JPG

Age 53, 18 years later or 12 years ago.   I had one Thermage treatment.  Actually an improvement over my 35 year old self.  You can see my skin is tighter.   But I lost a lot if not all of  the collagen in my cheeks.  I think these pictures really make a compelling argument for the loss of collagen and a saggy lower jaw as the primary signs of aging,  as well as the restoration of collagen with Thermage as the most natural solution for a youthful face.   It is far superior to a face lift     Who needs thin skin stretched out over bones ? That doesn’t make you look younger. It merely makes you look older or like an old person with a facelift

BELOW  AGE 64    TEN YEARS LATER and a few Thermage Treatments over the past 10 years

Version 2

ABOVE  AGE 64   I had one Thermage treatment September 2017  I was afraid I was finally getting too old and could no longer fight some loose skin, But its all gone and tight again.  Now if I can just get some botox for my forehead I can look even younger LOL

BELOW AGE  65  THERMAGE Today at 65  A perfectly straight jaw line, No double chin, No Chin fat, No jowls, No loose skin.  No Nasolabial folds or marionette lines (from the nose to the corner of the mouth.  Those lines are almost invisible which I actually had at 35 ( the top photo)

Thermage Face Male jaw lineVersion 2

ABOVE  65   First time I did a second treatment in less than a year ( like the ladies do)   You have to admit, me at 64 and 65 there is zero signs of aging in my lower face. Do I need botox ? Yes.  Could I use a full head of hair ? LOL  maybe.  But as far as what Thermage can do.  Its done !  Go back and look at me at 35.  Would really expect me to have a perfectly straight jaw line, no jowls, no double chin.  Not a drop of loose skin on the lower face 30 years later ?  PS I  did not get cheek implants.  In fact its obvious that I havent even had botox in over 2 years  Any filler or botox is completely worn off.  This is Thermage and only Thermage

Emtone Cellulite Reduction Treatment

Fermented Foods

Although I cant even find complete agreement on what the best fermented food are for you to eat, I do believe that they play a large role in your immune system and in breaking down your foods.  There is a ton of research and focus on “probiotics” lately.  Basically your gut has around 3 pounds of friendly bacteria which kill off bad bacteria, help you digest food and fight off infection.  Many believe that it is so important it deserves to be called an organ or an organ system.   Depending on where you live the actual strains might be a little different.  Been to Mexico lately ?  Well their guts are obviously different then ours.

The one we are all the most familiar with is Yogurt.  But if its full of sugar and you are lactose intolerant than its not a good choice for you.  You probably never gave it much thought but pickles, sauerkraut are also some more of the “good guys”  I even read a post that said sauerkraut helps to prevent cancer cells from forming.  But to be clear, I dont like to throw out stuff I read on blogs as truth unless I can find a real medical school study at the National Institute of Health,  ( hang on I will check)  Pubmed.com  Ok there are some studies that show it does inhibit the expression of some cancers.   And sorry for another detour, but Pubmed.com is like google for medicine.  Dont listen to people trying to sell you stuff.  And the studies literally pour in to that website.   Every day the latest research from medical schools all over the world are being submitted to pubmed.com . This is the real deal, research that uses established standards of proof and many with placebo controls as well.

Back to fermented foods.  sauerkraut, kefir, kimchi, miso soup, tempeh, kombucha, Pickles, Natto.  Most people agree on these.  But there are whole websites dedicated to probiotics.  Many list dark chocolate and brine cured olives as well.  This is a big topic.  Suffice it to say find some that you like and introduce them into your diet.   You may even find weight loss more easy when probiotics are part of your diet. PS beer and wine count too, in moderation.

December 2021 Women’s health. I think I have a valuable contribution to make. When it comes to vaginal health, who hasnt had an infection of some sort ? Ill give you a hint every female has dealt with this numerous times. I did some research today. I was actually surprised that its not only mainstream and countless products are being sold. But the research is all over PubMed The National Institute of Health website. The NIH website only shows published research with hard core data peer reviewed often with placebo groups, often from either med schools or major pharmaceutical companies. Which is one and the same since they fund the research in medical schools. I thought it was only fringe doctors. I remember 20 years ago sitting with my good friend Celebrity Nutritionist Oz Garcia when he was counseling a patient. At that time he counseled her to douche with probiotics and rotate the three different ones. He gave her a jar of each. By the way the patient was extremely wealthy and had gone to every top doctor in NY and was really in bad shape had to drop out of college. She had been working with Dr Oz for 10 years was not only back in college but had completed Med School. At that time we were considering me working with him in a more hands on way counseling patients. I did formulate his Longevity Pak. I put a lot of work into it. I even visited a number of vitamin manufacturing facilities from NJ to as far away as Arizona. I forget all of the experience I have had sometimes. Sorry for the segue. So fast forward to today. They do sell countless probiotics and probiotic suppositories. And if you want to read the research yourself, I made a search for probiotics and vaginal health on PubMed There were 447 articles and over a dozen in just the past 2 months. I tried reading for an hour and concluded that its almost impossible to standardize a treatment with living organisms and even harder is to get funding for that. Ironically but not surprising was that a drug maker had two groups one with the drug and one with the drug with probiotics. Thats often the only way they can get funding. So I went back and looked at gut health and probiotics. So its actually not that different yet I saw a promising article on alzheimers and gut health published just this month December 2021. I guess we are back to square one with probiotics as well as vitamins and my favorite expression. We all get to place our bets in life. I can find you someone over 100 years old that smokes cigarettes and another one that swears by a glass of scotch every day. Ironically when I googled vaginal health and probiotics a Harvard Health article popped up from 2018 which pretty much was negative about the idea. However when I googled how many people take probiotics ( 4 million by the way) another Harvard Health article from 2020 popped up which said how great they are for gut and vagina. So its obviously an evolving science. They did have one caveat to know the source of your probiotics. That goes double for vitamins as well. When I was helping Dr Oz Garcia with his vitamins the facility I visited in Arizona was also certified to make drugs. In fact we had to sign in and out, wear little booties and a paper like space suit to make sure we didnt contaminate anything. They pointed out to me how they inspected the “stainless steel mixing drums” yet later that month when I inspected a facility in NJ who manufactures for many common products that we all buy they were scooping protein powder with a shovel. So in my opinion you should take vitamins and enzymes and probiotics and you should look for some certifications like NSF, UL I like Consumerlab.com as well.

I didnt mean for it to get that complicated. Lets go old school for a moment and look for correlation ( which doesnt neccearily mean causation but its a good place to start) I dont know if you are old enough but there was a yogurt commmercial that featured Georgians. My parents are Armenian next door to Georgia in the middle east. They ate yogurt every day lived to their mid nineties. I recently asked my sister if my memory is any good because I dont remember either of them ever being sick not even a cold. Not only did she agree but she believes it was the yogurt. And she was having the same experience. PS it was home made. They actually always saved some yogurt to start the next batch. So you were literally saving the bacteria to “curdle” the next batch of milk with the same bacteria. No scientist measured what was in there but it was handed down for generations and each grandmother swore hers was the best. If you ate the last bit of it which was needed for the next batch all hell would come down on you.

We do know that your body is an ecosystem that has mostly non human cells trillions of them. Here is a revised estimate its not 10 to 1 but an average 150lb man is about 30 trillion human cells and 39 trillion bacteria, say Ron Milo and Ron Sender at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, and Shai Fuchs at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. I think our science it going to continue to evolve on the majority of the cells in our body which are non human and killing them with an “Antibiotic” which does kill certain infections is not the most elegant way to treat your body. However it is often necessary and life saving. Dont fall into the trap of 100% holistic. Sometimes you need an antibiotic to kill off a life threatening pneumonia and countless other diseases that can kill you. However a little self care can go a long way. My conclusion is do your best with going crazy. Actually back to where I started the article try to eat some fermented foods even yogurt. I believe activia did a study, oops they got sued and lost here is their revised claim from the lawsuit “As part of the settlement, Dannon agreed to make changes to its ad campaign to bring it in line with the product’s actual benefits (or lack thereof). Dannon will change the wording on the Activia® yogurt products. The company also promised to make changes to the yogurt’s labels and packaging. It will now say that the Activia® yogurt will help to regulate your digestive system if you take it for 2 weeks and also participate in a healthy lifestyle. They will remove the statement that says that it has a positive effect on the immune system. But some supplements and probiotics will do the body good. Actually check out my research on vitamin D. Sorry its complicated but its easy to take a few supplements and eat some fermented foods even if its merely a yogurt. PS try plain yogurt and add what you like fruit, jam or even honey. Ooh great idea for another topic love the benefits of honey, pollen and propolis.

More Books Diet Evolution & Lights Out

I just read Diet Evolution by Dr Gundry.  It was a fascinating read.  One of my other all time favorites is Lights Out.   Lights Out, Sleep Sugar and Survival has a huge bibliography and references countless studies that correlate the advent of electricity the invention of the light bulb and pretty much every disease that has afflicted modern man. Basically all animals and man have circadium rhythms.  The body is engaged in critical repair at night and producing hormones. If you interupt that critical  repair with artificial light you will be more susceptible to disease. He has so many studies that show the long lived people are often rural that wake up and go to sleep with natural light. ( although others ascribe the foods that these remote people eat.  It also tracks what happened when electricity and light came to the most remote farm lands in our country.  So you had places with same diet and the only variation was upsetting the sleep wake cycles with electricity and lights. Its a really fascinating read.  PS if you dont feel like reading it just try to be a little more in tune with natural light. So you can party til midnite in the summer but try to get to sleep  early ( even 9pm) 2  nights a week during the winter.

Many books talk about our genetics.  It actually makes a lot of sense your ancestors date back millions of years to the beginning of our appearance on earth however long ago you believe that to be. The ones that did not have efficient fat storage died off. The ones that didnt have an intelligent sweet tooth ate some bitter poison and died off.  I think we can agree those ideas make sense.  Dr Guthry the author of the diet evolution puts forth an even more radical idea.  He says that just like we witness all kinds of incredibly intelligent behviour for survival of species and propagation in the animal an plant kingdom, human genes are as intelligent if not more so.  He says once you reproduce, its actually in the best interest of your genes ( that want to live forever) to get rid of you.  Especially if you are gluttonous, your genes are going to assume that you are going to starve your babies so it will kill you off… Really stuff that makes you feel like you are reading science fiction. However Dr Gundry is a really famous Heart Surgeon and the book is chock full of examples of patients that were supposed to die, with extreme blockages that he cured with diet alone in a few short months. It was so fascinating I read it in 2 days.  So I will have to go back re read it and take out excerpts.  The other reason I loved this book is because he embraces high protein ( Atkins) and vegetarian ( Pritkin Ornish)  He says that start with Atkins to lose the weight but after you plateau you need to segue into a more vegetarian diet.  Really makes a lot of sense.

Have to mention Eat for Your Blood Type.  You dont even have to read the book just determine your blood type, google search foods that are supposedly good for you and bad for you and see if you feel that way when you eat those foods.  PS the interesting part of it, is that everyone was blood type O up until 10,000 years ago.  At that time type A and B were mutations. That also coincides with the advent of farming.  So supposedly type O’s cant possibly tolerate grains since grain never existed durring their reign on earth.  But then again if you subscribing to some of the other book’s theories it is somewhat irrelevant.  But its definitely worth having a peek at the foods that are suppossed to be avoided by your blood type and see if indeed they do or dont agree with you.

At the end of the day its all about being self aware. You can spend $20,000 a year and work with my best friend Oz Garcia for a year, like many of the rich and famous.  But he will insist that you keep a food log and notice how you feel after eating various foods.

Killer Hormones

Feel free to read into that any way you want. I am finally of the age where I am measuring my hormones and I’ve noticed certain ones declining.

Let’s put it this way  you know how difficult it is to get an insurance company to pay for anything yet mine is happily paying out thousands of dollars a month to pay for my growth hormone.  They know that if your body is not repairing itself you’re going to decline rapidly. My testosterone also declined. However the most amazing thing about it is that its not the sex drive that suffered its the mental drive.

I still always wanted sex and was ready and willing but my numbers declined and so did my mood and desire to do anything. PS after i started supplementing I ran for US Congress. There is so much that you need to know about this.

First of all if you don’t have a baseline or youthful numbers you wouldn’t even know where to begin.  For example a mans testosterone can range anywhere from 200 to 800. So as a hairy Armenian, who could part the hair on my back with a comb, before laser hair removal. My numbers were always 900. Not saying this to brag, but if I declined to 400 that would be a disaster, a decline of half and I would be depressed at the very least.  So go get a doctor to write a cpt code so you can get it tested for free.

Yet a normal white Irish guy who’s been four or 500 his whole life would be happily functioning at four or 500. So if we both went to the doctor he would say we are both normal given the 200 800 range.  So if you don’t have a test get one, because you’ll need to refer to it 20 30 or 40 years from now because your endocrinologist is going want to know what your normal was. And we’re not even getting started.

Women also have a small amount of testosterone which is responsible for their sex drive. And if men are too low in estrogen they would have heart issues so we all need a test consisting of a full sex hormone panel  including estradiol progesterone and testosterone free and total for men.  In addition to that you need to know your inhibitory and excitatory hormones meaning the ones that wake you up and the ones that keep you calm and help you fall asleep.

Obviously your thyroid  needs to be measured and you need a comprehensive blood test.  But in addition there are companies like neuroscience that will measure your inhibitory and excitatory hormones.  You may have heard of epinephrine and norepinephrine or dopamine, those are all excitatory hormones which can be measured.  And you want to make sure that chemicals like serotonin, your happy sleepy neurotransmitter is abundant at night, As well as melatonin.  There are companies like neuroscience that actually measure a number of different hormones and neurotransmitters in urine and your saliva at various times of the day and night to get an indication of whether you’re hormones are helping or hurting you.

hormones 2

They then recommend TAAT or Targeted Amino Acids Therapy.  So they would give you various amino acids (high school biology amino acids make up proteins and are more or less abundant in different foods) for example you’ve all heard that turkey is abundant in tryptophan which many claim is the reason for the nap after Thanksgiving Turkey dinner.

Again apologies but impossible to not segue when explaining all of this even superficially.  But the bottom line is you can’t fight against your hormones I’ll even relate my personal experience if that helps you to understand a little better how much it can affect you.  I take testosterone as a shot once a week. Ironically what I’ve noticed is that towards the end of the week when my testosterone is low I am for a lack of a better word bitchy, but when my testosterone is high and I am strong I am much more confident and able to deal with pretty much anything. Men who take testosterone are also given an aromatase inhibitor, in simple terms if a man has too much testosterone he could convert the excess testosterone into estrogen ( voila man boobs)   As we get older we are not as efficient in utilizing testosterone. So some of our testosterone becomes dihdrotestosterone which causes male pattern baldness and some  actually converts into estrogen. So an aromatase inhibitor like anastrozole is taken to reduce the amount of estrogen slightly, Again not too much because we do need estrogen to protect our hearts. That’s why we measure everything. Women are given aromatase inhibitors to reduce the amount of estrogen in the case of estrogen positive cancers or cancerous thought to be fed by estrogen.

homones 3

So my first suggestion as always is to start with your family doctor. Anytime you’re not feeling well it could be because of a serious illness. They will probably do a CBC short for a complete blood test.  However you probably want a full hormone panel as part of that blood test. Word of caution if your doctor doesn’t right a proper CPT code your insurance will not pay for.  If your insurance doesn’t pay for it you could be looking at a $2000 bill if you’re measuring all the hormones as well.   So always check first.  If your doctor’s knowledge is less than mine you need to find a new doctor.

Now in all fairness my dear friend who’s a heart surgeon doesn’t know the difference between an amino acid and a vitamin because he never studied it. But he’s the guy you want if you need open heart surgery so everyone has their specialty. If you want to approach this problem conventionally you need to see an endocrinologist but at the very least you need to have an idea if your hormones are normal by the numbers.  Something as simple as low serotonin could cause sleep difficulties, anxiousness, weight or mood issues (Pharmassan Labs) Low cortisol in the morning could mean your thyroid is not functioning properly. However once serious issues are ruled out and the conventional doctors, including the endocrinologists have given up on you, you can actually take care of yourself with certain amino acids to assist in “waking yourself” up in the morning and helping you relax at night.  But always test first and check with your doctor for more serious issues, before you go on to your own vitamin or amino acid protocol.

Once you are in range the conventional doctors will send you home and tell you you are normal and that’s where you might want to intervene.
