Your mind functions like a word blender, amalgamating everything you’ve heard throughout your life and your personal experiences, and then expressing it in your unique way. This process is universal; even Shakespeare, essentially rearranged words to convey meaning, artistry, create drama, and tell stories that resonated with the human spirit, imparting fundamental lessons and truths.
Ever heard the phrase “to thine own self be true”? That’s Shakespeare. Reflect on what you’ve thought, said, or rearticulated. When was the last time you rearticulated something?
Rearticulated, is a transitive verb, involves giving new or further expression to your thoughts. We all engage in this process daily. The challenge lies in embracing deep listening or what I’d call “love.” There is no greater feeling than being heard, felt, and understood—it acknowledges and affirms your very existence. It is the greatest gift you can give to another human being. And its not easy.
I have written about deep listening many times. Assuming you are a human being that’s been on the planet for more than 5 minutes. Every single word or thought that you hear reminds you of something in your own life. Many thoughts will come up if you listen for even five minutes to another person. Each word will trigger a memory and you will have a strong desire to share your experiences. Its no small task to stop the inclination to share your own thoughts beliefs and even if you merely want to agree with the person speaking that is still interrupting their train of thought.
But back to the great blender of yours we call a brain. You are constantly mixing and remixing everything you hear with your own thoughts, beliefs, ideals and even your own ethics and morals.
I started down this road when my friend Fernando said what I thought was pure genius. “I am never stressed out when I am doing, I am only stressed out when I am thinking about what to do”
He modestly gave credit to the fact that in his previous listening he heard a lot about that line of thinking before he came out with his specific articulation of that idea. It is so powerful I am going to write a blog about it.
PS its time to give accreditation to ‘Unblinded” Its a resource/program I have been involved with for a few months and Fernando is a co-founder. It gets very specific and granular about what we all do each and every day in the world of influence and business and self mastery. I will give more details about Unblinded in the back under resources.
