ME ME ME ME ME

I am sure you have heard this but you can never hear this enough. I literally forgot to ask questions first on a phone call this morning. Although she appreciated the origins of the technology I explained, she had already done the treatment we were speaking about. Wow shame on me. I could have gotten a lot more rapport if I had asked questions first and shown my interest and concern. I still could have said wow, we actually developed that very treatment that you did. Its just a reverse order of the conversation.

We have all heard this expression right? Everyone is tuned into WIFM. What is in it for me? I would propose it goes further than that. Its more like they are actually tuned to AM radio IAAM. Its All About Me.

And I cant blame them. What are any of us ever concerned about? We can try to have empathy but we only know what is going on in our own bodies, in our own minds, what hurts, what are our wants desires and dreams and ambitions. I have no clue what yours are unless I ask you. And I have to ask you with specificity. I also learned last week that some people really dont care about health. Really? How can you not care about that? I thought that was universal. I guess for yet another acronym dont assume. Not going to explain that one, we have all heard that.

Your significant other might be in the middle of something or have a particular pain or issue going on. You cant know that unless you ask. And some people dont share easily. You have to pull teeth with some people. Or you have to make them feel safe before they share. Crazy but you do have to do all of these things.

Funny I thought everyone heard this one, but the last few people I spoke to hadnt heard it. I dont know which of 2000 books I read it in or the hundreds of tapes I might have heard it in but the story goes like this; Its a psychological experiment. It involves 2 people and their subject a random person in first class.

So the person gets on plane with strict instructions. You engage the person seated next to you in conversation. From NY to LA for 5 hours they talk. The person initiating the experiment is told, “do not tell them anything about yourself” Not where you live, what you do, not even your name, nothing about you. You ask them questions about them the whole time, all 5 hours.

When the subject of the experiment gets off the plane they are interviewed with one question. Tell us about the person you sat next to. The subject replies, ” the most interesting person I have ever met” Seriously? Well I guess it actually makes sense because the most interesting person is themself.

I guess that is a great punctuation or ending to this short blog post. The most interesting person in the whole world to anyone is themself.
