Let me start by apologizing to Mathew Perry. I used this recent photo indicating that he became a chain smoking coffee guzzling machine. He said he wanted to be remembered for helping people. That is exactly what I am trying to do. We all know what TV shows and movies he was in. The truly ironic thing about this photo as I added this to this blog, was that I spent a year in AA and NA rooms (Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous rooms). I never saw more smokers and coffee drinkers. Which by the way is a great preamble to what I am trying to point out. These people, myself included, are craving any kind of “happy chemical” and they will happily risk their lives smoking ciggarettes and guzzling coffee and whatever to get that feeling. Dont you also want to feel great?
They should be handing out supplements at AA meeting and amino acids, or calming teas, dopamine agonists and or supplements to help increase your serotonin levels. Funny probably the first blog I wrote in 2016 was to measure your hormones, your excitatory ones and your inhibitory ones. You need to be able to manage how you feel in every possible way.
I am not a doctor as I have said multiple times. But I am a person that went through some stuff and some of the same stuff That Mathew Perry went through and a whole lot worse. In fact I have noticed that even today I crave “excitement” I have zero desire to retire. I love learning and trying to keep my body in excellent health. I also love learning about anti aging and what makes our brain tick.
In my life it was never an option to stop doing drugs and live a “normal” life. In fact I even vowed to myself, “give it a year or two to get your happy chemicals flowing naturally and if you cant do that you can always go back to drugs”. Funny I was trying to remember what I told myself. I forgot the second half of the statement. Because I had pretty much made up my mind I was done over 40 years ago. Today I live an excited, fulfilled and joyful life that is also peaceful.
But I also traveled many roads to “get happiness” naturally.
One of the things I also will never forget was what I articulated at Anthony Robbins Date With Destiny It was a weekend in person seminar in California. We spent days thinking about visualizing meditating and being hypnotized and trying a hundred different ways to understand our deepest values.
I will never forget, when we were finally sharing in a large room. I listened as people read off their goals. I remember hearing, family, love, marriage, children as pretty much, universal goals from everyone that shared, as 1,2,3 and 4 in different orders. I looked down at my list and no 1 was adventure, no 2 was excitement and so it went with my list probably success and money. In fact family love children marriage wasnt even on my list which went to 10. I gotta find those notes. I probably have them somewhere. So naturally I used drugs in my teens
And in the real world without drugs, I went skydiving, ran 5 miles every day even through the winter and in the snow. I even remember a magical New Years Day running in the snow really early in the morning. It was the quietest day ever. The snow compounds the quiet and stillness and there are no cars on the roads super early in the morning New Years Day it was magical.
So the point being is that we all have different needs that drive us. I also said multiple times I would rather kill myself than sign off on $250,000 a year with no ability to make any more than that. I also said that when I was making next to nothing.
I love possibility and excitement. But doesnt everyone crave some excitement in their life? Why do men cheat? Why do women cheat? We all have varying degrees of needs to get our adrenaline, our dopamine and whatever the happy chemicals are called.
Why do 50 million people jog? I am putting forth the hypothesis that they are the ones that get and crave a runners high. It is well known the chemical that is released is endorphins. It is the exact same chemical that is released when you take morphine or heroin. HMMMMMM let that sink in.
Currently I am once again experimenting with guarana and cholines and other amino acids and supplements. I want to recreate those “highs”. I also want to be the healthiest person that I can be and achieve some things that are truly special and unique. I also want to teach all that I have learned.
I have no clue what Mathew Perry did to replace his former ways. But in my humble opinion no one ever gives up anything without replacing it with something. I dont care if you are merely replacing a candy bar with an apple, its everything. Jog, take risks in business, take supplments different combinations of amino acids. No one stops anything cold turkey successfully without a replacement.
I dont know about all of the young “gurus” on the internet. God bless them if they figured it all out in less than 30 years. For me it took my whole life to get here. But we all do have things we can teach. If a younger person spent 10 years on one subject alone of course he would be qualified.
But from my lifetime of experiences some of us just need some excitement in our lives. Its not unusual for very successful people and those of great achievement to have a sort of fall from grace.
By the way we are all different. Like I said most of the people at Date With Destiny would do anything for love, marriage and children and the rest doesnt matter. And what I am saying about me and others like me of course probably doesnt resonate with the majority of people so you can ignore most of this. Or maybe not. Why do so many marriages end up in divorce? Do all humans crave change or excitement? Do the ones who stayed married have other exciting things in their lives?
You need to study yourself. PS that goes back to my very first blog. The best thing I can teach you is to study yourself. What makes YOU tick, what makes you happy. It is different for everyone.
Granted people make money by selling one supplement to everyone and for some segment of the population that it works for they are the guru. I would recommend trying them all and see how you feel. Its no different than the financial newsletters. It was recently discovered that they would mail 10,000 people for free with 2 opposite recommendations. Than follow up with the 5000 that were mailed the correct recommendation and repeat the process each half got opposite recommendation. Then go to the 2500 that they were again right, and finally go after the 1250 that they only received information indicating you were right three times in a row and attempt to sign them up for $1000 a year. How’s that for a quick million? The point I am making is that every book or idea is right for someone. I am not trying to make any money here I am just trying to impart what I have learned.
I think I am going back to guarana vs coffee for the rest of the week I will take notes but so far my brain is feeling great. Now I also used choline cocktail which has other brain nutrients in it and took my fish oil and so many other supplements it was literally a handful.
I am also in a great state of mind because my “mind” is very still and interested in learning and I have also recently, (this year) let go of so many things in my past that I am “still.” I dont talk to myself so I am able to be creative, because I am not bothered with repetitive thoughts I am living what I preach. I am living, enjoying, being peaceful and creating and listening. I am not ruminating about anything. Its just counterproductive and not worth the effort.
You dont have to worry about nothin,. “Caq Tzoon e Daq chee minar.” thats Armenian for the shit doesnt remain under the snow. It makes a bit more sense than you cant hide your dirty laundry, because there is a time element involved.
I remember in the Graphic Arts industry I never paid off anyone, while witnessing many salespeople making millions a year in commissions for decades because they were paying people off. And the recipients, the directors at the advertising agencies lived like Kings with the millions in cash they received every year. And I started wondering if my theory was true. But I can tell you today some of the most annoying Gonifs in the industry are spending their 70’s and 80’s in jail.
Boy you really are getting a lesson in cultural colloquialisms today. We have an Armenian saying and the Yiddish word for thief or crook, gonif.
Back to my post. Stay excited. Do what you need to do to keep your brain happy. Take the supplements you need, get the exercise you need. Most importantly get the excitement you need. I believe that Mathew Perry, myself, Mick Jagger, Russel Brandt and the 50 million joggers that “need” to run every day in this country are excitement junkies and or endorphin junkies.
But what do I know? I am not a doctor I can only speak from more decades on this planet than 99% of the doctors and psychiatrists that you follow, as well as the visceral knowledge of being able to compare a runners high to actual IV heroin and or IV cocaine and or the combination of both.
But to be clear I also listen to some of the others that you listen to. I even get some of my best ideas there, although I need to put it in my brain spin it around a bit and see how that applies in the real world and combine it with other knowledge I have acquired. Then I strip out all the mumbo jumbo. You dont need to know the names of the parts of the brain, unless you are planning on being a neurosurgeon.
You only need to know what works. What is the fasted way to get there and tell me in the quickest way possible and dont bloviate to fill up a one hour. pod cast. You can repeat the idea in a different way and from a different point of view, and I’ll listen and maybe that too will help. But life is short, Twitter or X is shorter. And I dont think I am going to do a one week meditation. But if I do I will report here immediately.
Actually maybe I will as I explore the deepest depths of our existence and our potential. But so far doing great and repeating how I got here in mere minutes not hours and certainly not a 3 day seminar with the big guy or a one week meditation thing. Not to say they all dont have their place, But there is a lot of repetition in the “long form”
As always if you need help get it. Drugs arent safe today. I recently told a young friend you were safer shooting up heroin in the seventies than accepting one pill that didnt come from a pharmacy. That is just a fact. Although the 10 square block area I used to frequent in New York in the 70’s had about 100 murders a month. The drugs were a lot safer.
And to the subject at hand if you are an excitement junkie, you need to acknowledge it and satisfy the cravings naturally, or you will screw up your life. You will eat too much or drink too much or cheat or do drugs. Or you can be uber successful, go running 5 miles a day, go sky diving, skeet shooting find a new sport. Heck even do public speaking its a universal fear that should kick up some excitement or do cold plunges or cryotherapy. And be very aware of what you eat and how you feel. You dont have to die prematurely or live a fat drunk life.
